With whole house filtration you won’t necessarily clean your water to the same extend as you would for drinking water. If we clean the water of your entire house the question we will ask ourselves is; what specific problem or problems in the water we want to eliminate? Here are a couple of basics problems and their solutions:

Problem: In all our municipal purification plants chlorine is used as an disinfectant to kill bacteria and viruses. If there is an excess amount of chlorine in the water it will cause damage to clothes and has serious health risks when showered or bathed in.

Solution: For chlorine removal activated carbon is used. The best system to install to solve this problem is the Mega Char, due to its long tubular design effective contact with the activated carbon is achieved and optimal chlorine removal is possible. Other solutions include 2 Stage Big Blue filters as well as Shower filters.

Problem: Most borehole water in South Africa has high concentrations of lime (CaCO3) in them. This causes a lot of problems with lime scale build up on pipes, geysers and kettle elements. It also causes white clothing to turn yellow and soap that doesn’t want to foam.

Solution: The most effective way of lime removal is a water softner, it is the only product available that actually removes the lime out of the water. Another way of protecting your elements is a Descaler, which will put the lime in suspension and prevent it from forming lime scale on your elements.

Problem: If you are drawing your water from a river, canal or dam the biggest two problems are a large amount of sediment in the water and bacteria, viruses and parasites in the water.

Solution: For the removal of sediment we can use products like sand filters, Big Blue Sediment filters(2stage plump), Mega Char Carbon Filters, Bag Filters and also flokulasion.
To eliminate bacteria, viruses and parasites UV-Lights is a very effective way, but you have to ensure that sediment has effectively been removed from the water. Other options incl. chlorination and the Dulton Filter(RIO 2000). With Chlorination it is advised that the chlorine is removed after it has been chlorinated, because of the negative effect of chlorine. One of the big advantages of the Dulton Filter is that it doesn’t require electricity.
