Launch of the revised Tree Rooting Habits booklet

29.09.11

The revised version of the "Tree Rooting Habits and their Implications for the Infrastructure of Rand Water" booklet was launched at the Water Services Forum on Urban Agriculture hosted by Rand Water on 21 September 2011. In light of recent arbor celebrations and the role of trees in urban agriculture, the Forum provided an appropriate platform for the booklet launch.

Rand Water is honoured to have Dr R. Poynton re-write the booklet.  His invaluable experience and world renowned knowledge in this field has allowed the booklet to be appropriately updated.

Ficus macrophylla 2WHAT DOES THE NEW BOOKLET OFFER?

The first edition of this booklet was printed in 2001 however, with the increase in Rand Water's area of supply in the past 10 years and a change in tree species in the area, there was a need to expand the scope.  The new booklet now takes into account a broader range of trees and distinguishes between indigenous and invasive exotic trees. In addition, the booklet describes a simple formula to calculate the minimum distance at which a specific tree should be planted to ensure it does not damage infrastructure such as buildings, pipelines, walkways and pavements.  The result is a cost saving on potential repairing and replacing of infrastructure as well as a reduction in any water wastage or environmental spills as a consequence of damaged infrastructure.

This is the only known available booklet covering this specific topic for South African conditions.
